Certificate Program in Sustainable Business |

Program courses will examine the business case for sustainability. Sustainability is treated as a driver of strategy, innovation and profit. Students will develop strategies and present cases through application of current conceptual frameworks, measurement systems and reporting initiatives. The content of these three courses is comparable to the nine-credit Foundations of Sustainable Business sequence in the MBA program.
Fall Quarter
Introduction to Sustainable Business (SBUS 530, 3 credits)
An overview of the current “state of the art” in sustainable business theory and practice. The course covers three broad topics:
• The business case for sustainability
• Conceptual frameworks and reporting systems
• The sustainable organization—putting it all together

Winter Quarter
Systems Thinking in Action (SBUS 531, 3 credits)
Systems thinking is a foundational element of the BGI approach to business and the full range of local and global issues. This course provides an introduction to systems thinking with particular emphasis in three major areas:
• Systems biology
• Systems dynamics
• Systems thinking and evolutionary systems design

Spring Quarter
Sustainability, Community and Social Justice (SBUS 532, 3 credits)
This course is designed to provide students with in-depth theoretical and practical perspectives on the responsibility of business in society by examining the following topics independently and their interrelations.
• Social entrepreneurship
• Social justice
• Community development
